Humans Praying; God
Answering (verses 13-17)
13Relent, Lord! How long will it be?
Have compassion on your servants.
14Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,
14Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,
that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
15Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
15Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
for as many years as we have seen trouble.
16May your deeds be shown to your servants,
16May your deeds be shown to your servants,
your splendor to their children.
17May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us;
establish the work of our hands for
us—
yes,
establish the work of our hands.
We can pray that with God’s help He will replace our sorrow with
joy and turn our lives into fruitful service for Him. May we wait patiently for
the compassion of our Lord, and find no satisfaction in earthly things. The
mercy of God alone can satisfy our souls. When God refreshes us with His
presence, no one can take our joy from us. God’s grace meets the demands of
justice and therefore blesses us sinners. God accepts our work, establishing it
as having value. May His church be an eternal edifice to the praise and glory
of God.
Answer, Lord! Have pity on us Your servants!
Satisfy us with Your unending love, that we may be glad all our days. Let Your deeds
be shown to us, and Your splendor to our children. Let the favor of You, Lord
our God, be on us, and establish the work of our hands.
O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come;
Be Thou our guide while life shall last,
And our eternal home.
Isaac Watts (1674-1748)
