Remembering God's Greatness (Psalm 77), Part 3

Thunder of God’s Power (verses 16-20)

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%2077:16-20&version=NIV

At creation turbulent waters writhed before God. By parting the Red Sea God won the battle against the waters of chaos. The winds and the waves obeyed Jesus, God incarnate. May we find our relief by reflecting on God’s mighty power in the past.

Thank You, Creator-God, for Your mighty creation. Thank You for sustaining and controlling our universe. As Your flock, lead us by Your powerful hand, O Lord.

When we find ourselves distressed and complaining, may we look back at all that God has done in our lives and may we look up at God’s unchanging character. God will complete the good work He began in us. May we find pleasure in remembering God’s deeds, and telling what He has done.

He who ‘mid the raging billows walked upon the sea
Still can hush our wildest tempest, as on Galilee;
He who wept and prayed in anguish in Gethsemane,
Drinks with us each cup of trembling, in our agony.
Yesterday, today, forever, Jesus is the same.

Remembering God's Greatness (Psalm 77), Part 2

Courage from the Past (verses 10-15)

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%2077:10-15&version=NIV

Reflecting on God’s acts in the past comforts those who need Him in the present, building confidence for the future. The whole history of Israel provides proof of God’s love and power. May we sing hymns that include a deep sense of awe of God’s great holiness and power. We can be strong in our faith when we have God’s strong arm to lean on.

Lord our God, we remember Your deeds and Your miracles of long ago. We consider all Your works and meditate on all Your mighty deeds. Your ways, God, are holy. You, our great God, still perform miracles and display Your power among the peoples. Thank You that with Your mighty arm You have redeemed Your people.

Remembering God's Greatness (Psalm 77), Part 1

The mood of Psalm 77 changes from lamentation to reflection, ultimately giving way to joyfully celebrating the greatness of God. God has not rejected His people forever; He will keep His promises.

Cries of the Heart (verses 1-9)

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%2077:1-9&version=NIV

In our distance from God we wonder whether God has rejected us forever. When our distress inhibits our sleep and speech, we can remember God’s past acts of goodness. God will comfort His people. We may freely ask God questions. In our questions lies our hope. The God of mercy will free us from our misery. God’s descent to humanity has elevated humans to His level. May we remember God’s mercy and compassion.

Lord our God, we cry out to You for help; we cry out to You to hear us. In our distress we seek You, Lord. Help us to remember You, God, and to meditate on Your Word. Help us to remember Your mercy and compassion.
