Tyrants on Trial (Psalm 58, Part 3)

The Purge: The tyrants avenged (verses 10-11)

May we turn justice and vengeance over to God. God will bring His fallen and distorted creation back under His sovereignty. His just judgment will set things right. We can express our joy when we see the reign of terror come to an end. In God’s mercy we will obtain unspeakable blessings.

Righteous God, avenge the tyrants. Thank You that You judge the earth with uprightness. Surely the righteous still are rewarded.

While we do not find forgiveness of our enemies easy, may this psalm purify our feelings of rage and abandonment as we acknowledge to God our hurt and anger. May we submit in faith to God, relinquishing our personal retribution. May we pray for our sisters and brothers who are trampled by tyrants beyond their control. May this psalm convict us of our own guilt.

Satan tells us we’re weak; our hope is in vain.
The good that we seek we’ll never obtain.
But he can’t take from us (though often he’s tried)
The heart-cheering promise—The Lord will provide.
John Newton (1725-1807)
