In the midst of our peril
from our enemies, rather than asking God to destroy them we can submit to His
ultimate judgment and pray for our enemies to seek God. May this psalm remind
us that our greatest power as God’s people is prayer.
The Peril of God’s People (verses 1-8)
God
frequently appears silent in order to test the faith of His people. Because of
God’s silence, His enemies assume that He either is non-existent or
indifferent. We fear the government, media, and society, who seem united
against us. God’s enemies find their strength in their solidarity. They combine
forces even with their enemies. Yet God holds them accountable for their
self-aggrandizement. When we find ourselves surrounded by God’s enemies, we can
use this psalm to implore God not to be silent.
O God, in the
face of enemies all around us do not keep silence; do not turn a deaf ear, do not stand aloof. See how Your enemies rear their heads
against You and Your people, conspiring and seeking to destroy us. With
one mind they plot together, forming an alliance against You and Your people. Come
to our rescue, Lord our God.
