Rejoice in the Lord Our King (Psalm 97, Part 1)

We rejoice in the Lord our King who delivers His people and judges the nations. Holiness, righteousness and justice provide the basis for His kingdom. May we seek God’s perfect justice in our world today, looking to the future reign of our Lord on earth and praise Him.

The Earth Rejoices (verses 1-5)

1The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice.
2Clouds and thick darkness surround him;
      righteousness and justice
      are the foundation of his throne.
3Fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side.
4His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles.
5The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
      before the Lord of all the earth.

When our awesome God makes Himself known, the earth trembles and rejoices. Yet, as if covered by clouds, the glory of Christ’s kingdom is hidden from the world. We cannot see the things of God unless He opens the eyes of our understanding. The fire of the Holy Spirit that came down at Pentecost continues to burn freely around the world. May Jesus’ reigning power consume our lusts and melt our souls to obedience.

You, Lord our God, reign; let the earth rejoice! Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne. Your lightnings light up the world; the earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax before You, Lord of all the earth.
